Not sure where to start?

Most people begin with one of two questions: what is this business actually worth, or should I buy one at all. Both take a couple of minutes and are free.

What people ask before buying a business

How much does it cost to buy a small business?
Most owner-operated small businesses sell for roughly 2 to 4 times seller's discretionary earnings (SDE). A business earning $150,000 in SDE typically lists between $300,000 and $600,000, with the multiple rising when earnings are stable, staffed and not dependent on the owner.
Is it better to buy an existing business or start one?
Buying gives you existing customers, cash flow and staff from day one, but costs more upfront and carries inherited risk. Starting costs less in cash and gives full control, but usually takes 12 to 24 months to reach a comparable income. Our Buy vs Build tool scores both paths against your capital, timeline and risk tolerance.
What is a good SDE multiple?
For most main-street businesses under $1M in earnings, 2x to 3x SDE is normal, 3x to 4x reflects strong margins and low owner dependence, and above 4x usually means recurring revenue, contracts or a management team in place.
How do I know if a listing is worth pursuing?
Check earnings quality, customer concentration, owner dependence, lease and licence transferability, and how the asking price compares to earnings. The WhatBiz Deal Analyzer scores a listing on those dimensions and flags where the numbers do not hold up.
